How to make it

Ingredients

For the Usal

  1. 1 cup black-eyed peas (lobia), soaked for 6-8 hours
  2. 2 tablespoons oil (preferably coconut or vegetable oil)
  3. 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  4. 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  5. 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  6. 1-2 green chilies, slit
  7. 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  8. 1 medium tomato, chopped
  9. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  10. 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  11. Salt to taste
  12. 2-3 tablespoons grated coconut (optional)
  13. Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Tempering:
  2. In the cooker, heat oil. Add mustard seeds and wait for them to splutter.
  3. Add cumin seeds, followed by chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions are golden brown.
  4. Add Spices:
  5. Stir in ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until fragrant.
  6. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
  7. Combine Ingredients:
  8. Drain the soaked black-eyed peas and place them in a pressure cooker with enough water
  9. If using, add grated coconut and mix.
  10. Add a bit of salt and cook for about 3-4 whistles, or until tender.
  11. Garnish and Serve:
  12. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
