Dal Fry Recipe

Ingredients

  1. Toor Dal (Pigeon Pea Lentils): 1 cup (200g)
  2. Water: 4 cups (for cooking dal)
  3. Oil or Ghee: 2 tablespoons
  4. Cumin Seeds: 1 teaspoon
  5. Onion: 1 medium, chopped
  6. Tomato: 1 medium, chopped
  7. Ginger-Garlic Paste: 1 tablespoon
  8. Green Chilies: 1-2, slit
  9. Turmeric Powder: 1/2 teaspoon
  10. Red Chili Powder: 1 teaspoon
  11. Garam Masala: 1/2 teaspoon
  12. Salt: to taste
  13. Fresh Coriander Leaves: for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the Dal:
  2. Rinse the toor dal under cold water. In a pressure cooker, add the dal and water. Cook for about 3-4 whistles or until soft. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Tempering:
  4. In a pan, heat oil or ghee. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  5. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  6. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies; sauté for a minute.
  7. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  8. Combine:
  9. Add the cooked dal to the pan. Mix well. Adjust water for desired consistency.
  10. Add garam masala and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  11. Garnish:
  12. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with rice or roti.
