How to make it

Ingredients

  1. For the Paruppu Usili:1 cup yellow moong dal (yellow split mung beans)
  2. 1/4 cup chana dal (split Bengal gram)
  3. 2 green chilies (adjust to taste)
  4. 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  5. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  6. Salt, to taste
  7. 1 tablespoon oil
  8. 1 onion, finely chopped
  9. 2-3 Garlic cloves
  10. 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds and other tempering (Urad dal, Chana dal)
  11. 1/2 cup finely chopped vegetables (like beans, carrots, or cabbage)
  12. Curry leaves, for flavor

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dal:
  2. Soak yellow moong dal and chana dal for 2-3 hours, then drain. Grind them with green chilies and cumin seeds into a coarse paste, adding water as needed.
  3. Steam the Mixture:
  4. Transfer the paste to a steaming plate and steam it for about 15-20 minutes until cooked. In the same steamer, steam chopped veggies in a separate plate. Let it cool and crumble.
  5. Sauté the Vegetables:
  6. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add curry leaves and other tempering ingredients, along with chopped onions & garlic, cook it through.
  7. Add the steamed vegetables, and sauté until they soften.
  8. Combine:
  9. Add the crumbled dal mixture to the sautéed vegetables along with turmeric powder and salt. Stir well, cooking for an additional 5-7 minutes.
  10. Serve:
  11. Enjoy hot with steamed rice or as a side dish.
