Ingredients

  2. Toor Dal (Pigeon Peas): ½ cup
  3. Water: 4 cups
  4. Tamarind Paste: 1 tablespoon (or a small lemon-sized ball of tamarind soaked in water)
  5. Tomato: 1 medium, chopped
  6. Rasam Powder: 2 tablespoons (store-bought or homemade)
  7. Turmeric Powder: ½ teaspoon
  8. Mustard Seeds: 1 teaspoon
  9. Cumin Seeds: 1 teaspoon
  10. Curry Leaves: A few
  11. Salt: To taste
  12. Oil: 1 tablespoon
  13. Fresh Coriander: For garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook Rice and Dal: In a large pot, add rice, toor dal, and 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then simmer until both are cooked and soft (about 15-20 minutes).
  2. Prepare Rasam: In a small bowl, mix tamarind paste with a little water. Add this to the cooked rice and dal mixture along with chopped tomato, rasam powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Stir well.
  3. Simmer: Let it simmer for another 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend.
  4. Temper: In a small pan, heat oil or ghee. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, green chilies, and curry leaves. Let them splutter and then pour this tempering over the rasam sadam.
  5. Garnish: Mix well and garnish with fresh coriander. Serve hot.
